How To Recognize The Early Symptoms of Mesothelioma Or Asbestos Related Cancer
Many Shipyard Workers Have Been Exposed to Asbestos, Which Causes a Type of Cancer Called Mesothelioma. You may be able to join a class action asbestos lawsuit.
Become Aware Of The Symptoms of Mesothelioma
The symptoms of the disease mesothelioma, also known as asbestos cancer, in the early stages may be vague and nonspecific, leading in many cases to a delay in the initial diagnosis. Sometimes the symptoms of mesothelioma may mimic that of other diseases such as congestive heart failure, emphysema, or even simple weight gain or constipation.
Who Is At Risk For Asbestos Related Cancer?
Generally, if you have worked around asbestos as a part of your normal job duties for any part of your life, including time spent in the military, you should be screened for signs of the disease called Mesothelioma or asbestos cancer. If you experience any of the symptoms mentioned here, you should visit your doctor. In addition to workers who directly handled asbestos, spouses who came in contact with asbestos contaminated clothes may also have been placed at risk.
It was only a few decades ago that asbestos recognized to the the cause of disease and many of us worked around it as if it were a harmless material.
Like cigarettes there was some strong evidence that asbestos was giving people cancer but there was a lot of resistance from the companies getting rich off of it to keep the knowledge that asbestos was a carcinogen hidden. Asbestos was prized for its insulating and fireproofing qualities and it is for that reason that asbestos was used in ships and factories. We breathed asbestos dust, kicked asbestos out of our way, and never thought that such a harmless looking material might kill us someday. Because some of the companies knowingly sold a cancer causing product without warning customers, there are many asbestos lawsuits today. See Can you get mesothelioma from laundry?
Some Typical Signs of Mesothelioma Or Asbestos Cancer
Early symptoms of the disease may, and I emphasize the word MAY, include that of shortness of breath, persistent chest pain or cough, night sweats, weight loss and fluid gain, bowel obstruction, swelling of the feet, and a build up of fluid on a chest x-ray, or "pleural efflusion". Don't delay in seeing a doctor if you have any of these symptoms.
What Is a Pleural Effusion and How Does It Relate to Mesothelioma?
One symptom of mesothelioma or asbestos cancer is called pleural effusion, or a build up of the fluid that is between the parietal pleura and the visceral pleura. The parietal pleura covers the chest wall and diaphragm and the visceral pleura covers the lungs. These membranes are coated with mesothelial cells, which normally secrete a lubricating fluid that protects the space between the chest wall and lung. Normally, any excess fluid that the mesothelial cells secrete is absorbed into the bloodstream and into the lymph nodes. When too much of this fluid builds up a condition known as an effusion occurs and this is one symptom of mesothelioma.
How to Know If A Pleural Effusion Is Caused By Mesothelioma
There are typically two types of pleural effusions that are seen by doctors. The most common is the type known as transudates. Transudate fluid is usually clear in color and often forms when there is an imbalance between fluid produced and fluid removed, such as during cases of congestive heart failure.
The other type of pleural effusion that may be a sign of mesothelioma is called exudates. An Exudate is often cloudy and is made up of cells, proteins and other fluid and results from a diseased pleura. Since mesothelioma is a disease of the pleura this can be an indicator. A fluid sample must be taken to determine if the fluid is transudate or exudate.
If the fluid is exudate, then tests to check for malignant cells will follow. This test may be uncomfortable but the pain is temporary.
How A Pleural Effusion Is Detected
The diagnosis the condition known as pleural effusion is normally done with a regular chest x-ray. If the doctor suspects that the patient shows symptoms of mesothelioma, based on the x-ray and other symptoms, he may order that a fluid sample be taken.
This is known as diagnostic thoracentesis. This test is not a definitive test for mesothelioma but merely to determine if more tests are needed. In order to be sure, a sample of the lining of the lung needs to be obtained by a needle biopsy or surgery.
What to Do If You Suspect You May Have Mesothelioma or Asbestos Cancer Of the Lungs
If you have worked around asbestos, or have been in the military, especially in duties that required you to work below decks such as in the engine room, you should be checked for symptoms of mesothelioma as a part of your normal yearly checkup.
Asbestos was frequently used in the engine rooms of ships up until the 1970's. Other occupations where asbestos would have been encountered include shipbuilding and decommissioning, refinery and plant work, welding, oilfield work and a host of other professions. If you are suffering from any of the symptoms above you should promptly visit your doctor.
Since there are active mesothelioma lawsuits in most states, your medical exam may be paid for in full even if you have no health insurance. If you suspect that you have been exposed to any form of asbestos, you may be at risk of developing asbestos cancer or mesothelioma.
There are other forms of asbestos related cancer. Contact your doctor for more information on the types of asbestos cancer and the warning signs and risk factors.
If you find that you do have mesothelioma, contact a lawyer in your area to see if you may be eligible to participate in a class action lawsuit against asbestos producing or asbestos using companies. It may not cost you anything to join an asbestos lawsuit and if you prevail your mesothelioma treatment will be covered as well as other compensation.
